This Is Not About Politics

First of all, I’m not a fan of politics due to the constant arguments and put-downs of others. All in all, people just want to live their lives happily and without having to worry about the government stepping in to put personal wants and needs on hold. Specifically, I’m referring to things such as same-sex marriage, and the most recent government decision - transgender citizens cannot serve in the military.
Now I know the title of this blog says “this” is not about politics; by “this” I mean the fact that we are ALL human. Being humans with flaws and lives, with similar wants and needs for ourselves just like anyone in this world.
Why is it that natural things such as race, or sexuality, or appearance are allowed to give us a bad wrap in society? Why is it that if you have piercings and/or tattoos, you are immediately unprofessional or a threat to people? And why is it that the way you can love people is judged by those that live to hate people?
Society has become a poison to the beautiful people who make life so worth living - every single person on this planet acting as one of those people in someone else’s life. It is why all the ones that may care too much, get hurt the most for just that reason - myself being one of them. We care so much for everything around us and when something goes wrong, that - a lot of times - may have nothing to do with us personally, the declining faith in humanity can crush us.
Below these words, you’ll see two photos in a slideshow - one is of the cover of an amazing collection of poetry by my favorite poet, Erin Hanson, and a selection from this collection titled “Welcome To Society.” This piece perfectly captures the bias and judgmental demeanor of the world around us; it discusses how we will “never be perfect” unless we conform, which still isn’t enough since there’s a variety of ideas and lifestyles to conform to with too many people, with too many of these ideas.
These many ideas, in the negative sense, are all the different ways the judgmental minds of the world believe others should be. In my opinion, this variety of personality types should be appreciated and admired. So many beautiful combinations of traits, and personalities to form new types of people.
It seems that we are made up of all the books we read, the music we hear, the films we see, and the people that touch our lives. We become what we envy, what we admire, and what we hope to live up to. I guess the moral of the story, is that it is our personal right to be ourselves and to live as such so long that we do not harm others in the process. We don’t have to be religious to know that the commandment “love thy neighbor” is universal knowledge. Although, it seems that these days it is unfortunate that this simple action seems like the hardest thing in the world for many.
Why waste time hating and talking down to others, when you can live your life in love and peace?
